Fraud
Last but not least, there is the danger of fraudulous behaviour. Of course we assume that everyone plays the game to have a good time, but sometimes people will do more to achieve victory. One of the possibilities is manipulating the computer and its facilities. It is for example possible to forge mail and have it appear to come from the GameMaster. It is also possible to break in to the computer, and alter the games databases (or simply read it and find out what other players are doing). Of course we try to prevent this, but during my graduation-period I had to investigate various security options, and while searching, I found this phrase on the internet that really says it all: 'The only safe computer on this world, is a computer surrounded by nerve gas, burried in a 50-feet deep concrete bunker, on an abanded island and surrounded by highly payed guards. And even then I wouldn't stake my life on it' In the game, anything goes. You may back-stab anyone, tell lies, you can name it and frame it. Outside the game, there are strict rules. The computer, web, and mail facilities may only be used to retrieve your own information. All information is of course guarded with passwords, but there is always someone with a simple password that can be guessed easily. The constitution says we should protect the weak, and so we will :-) We will ban everyone who uses the computer to retrieve information that is not meant for him. It is also strictly forbidden to use the computer to pretend you are someone else (like player A, pretending to be player B, and declaring war to player C by forged e-mail). To summarize all this: The computer is a neccesary means to play the game, but may, under no surcumstance, be used to alter the outcome of the game. The punishment for misbehaviour will be termination of the account(s) involved. This automaticly implies that ALL games that are connected to these accounts will be eliminated. This punishment may seem harsh, but the damage such behaviour can do to the game is probably graver, so we want to be absolutely clear about this. The game itself will provide you with enough means to do anything you want. Furthermore we can program just about anything, so if you think of a nice extension to the game, just contact us, and we will see if we can provide it for you.
